Some of you may have noticed that the cover images for all of our recent singles have a butterfly shape in them. It’s not easy to see in all of them, sometimes it’s only present as negative space. But this song is the reason why.
Originally the idea was to release an album called The Spider And The Butterfly. The latter part of this title refers to Wings, whose lyrics are about a caterpillar turning into a butterfly. At least, that’s how it seems on the surface.
Digging in a little, the song is also a metaphor for how some of us changed in the time we were isolated from the rest of the world during the COVID pandemic. Just before things locked down, I had been practicing and getting ready to start performing around New York City.
But the world had other plans. I remember wondering, what if I never get the chance to get back out there? I also remember promising myself that if this passes, I wouldn’t wait any longer. I’ve tried to live up to that.
The best part about this song though is the contribution of Kieran Ledwidge, formerly of the band Miracles of Modern Science. Kieran wrote and performed an entire string section for this song, as if an orchestra had joined us. Thirty-seven tracks in total! Check out the Strings Forward Remix that strips out the drums and guitars if you want to hear this all up front.
The result echoes our late 90s roots, especially Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls, with dashes of Smashing Pumpkins and Pearl Jam thrown in for good measure.
